First of all, i want to point out that all those rumors in the last months are NOT fake: the expansion exists and they are working on it since last year, there is evidence about it so noone can claim this is all invented. Second, considering the pace, name, entity and time-frame in which the TLE entry on steam is updated, we can safely say that: 1- It's 100% an expansion for Xcom2, so not Xcom 3 prototype or some collection pack or whatever.
2- It's quite big, probably just like WOTC. It is for sure bigger than Shen last gift or Alien Hunters.
About the release date well, it's taking longer than expected (probably just because it's bigger than expected), but we should be close to an announce. Firaxis won't be either in Gamescom or PaX but this doesn't mean they can't make announcements outside those event. It happened in the past and many devs do that.
Maybe Take two want to have all the events focus on Red Dead redemption 2. So, what to expect in terms of content? Of course we can expect standard stuff like new weapons, enemies, items and maybe a couple of environments (just like tunnels and old cities were for Wotc) but there should be some major feature. Many claims it will be end game content and it would be really nice but this means that a guy who start a new playthrough won't see any expansion content in the first 20 hours, and that is very unlikely.
Also, the expansion should work even without Wotc, so it cannot be stuff like more chosen or anything Wotc related. A good guess would be post game content but with something in-between like new mission types or systems: maybe interceptors and ufos layer just like the old game? Maybe multiple bases? Maybe an entire new parallel storyline throughout the campaign which involve Valhen and related missions. There are many possibilities but with a good sense of wisdom we can point more over some stuff. To be honest the hype is killing me.
I really want to start another full campaign but at the same time i want to wait until the expansion will be announced. I hope 2k starts to accelerate the marketing process because a big chunk of competitors are coming out like wisps (Phantom doctrine, Phoenix Point, Jagged Alliance Rage, etc.) I miss seeing this subreddit explode when something new was announced.
